Description:
This 1-day online workshop addresses PhD students who would like to improve their personal writing skills and gain insight into style and structure conventions of scientific texts.

Trainer: Carly Crane

This workshop tackles the fundamentals of modern academic and research writing in English. By working closely with published texts, participants will learn about the expectations of academic readers and of writing conventions in the life sciences. Critically, through these in-workshop exercises, participants will be introduced to an effective way to learn about the writing in one’s own field—an essential method for facing the rigors of doctoral writing and preparing oneself for academic publishing. Participants will also discuss their own writing processes and be introduced to key strategies for the writing process.

Learning objectives

By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Read texts in their own field to become aware of the academic and disciplinary vocabulary, style, and conventions used.
  • Apply this language and structure to their own writing.
  • Investigate the structure of writing in their own field to help inform the planning and writing of their own texts.
  • Reflect on and adapt their writing process to new challenges.
